The village of Casale Superiore

The village stood on a low hill on the left to the River Tronto. The place was undoubtedly strategic. It was protected from the winds from the north thanks to its position on the middle of the hill toward the top, and it allowed to easily control the valley below; a very ancient way crossed this valley, which would later become the Via Salaria. For more than 700 years, the village was inhabited: from the Middle Bronze Age (from the 17th to the 14th century BC) to the end of the Iron Age (from the end of the 10th century BC to the end of the 9th century BC).
The archaeological excavation at Casale Superiore, in the territory of Colli del Tronto (AP), revealed a foundry thanks to some moulds for bronze melting, and a probable workshop for the production of vases, considering the great amount of pottery waste.
Seeds, bones and burnt food remains tell us about the diet of the village inhabitants, which was primarily composted of cereal and legume soups, and sheep meat.
