The encounter with Celts

Two events marked Picenum history at the beginning of the 4th century BC: a Syracusan emporium was established in Ancona; Gauls or Celts settled in the central and southern part of Marche. They were Senones. According to ancient sources, their territory stopped at River Esino; single Celtic objects were present even much souther.    Particularly, there are found in the upper Vibrata Valley, in northern Abruzzo.
The pots and toiletry items that were distributed to the Adriatic peoples became standard products, and they made these romanising peoples alike.
According to tradition, Picene culture reached its end in 295 BC with the Sentino battle. In that occasion, Romans were warned exactly by Picenes from Ascoli and managed to inflict a decisive crushing defeat to the Celts.
