Infuences from the East

Decorative and everyday objects have chimeras, swastikas, sun crosses, fantastic beasts already at the end of the 8th century BC. They came from the distant East through trade with the Greeks of the first Campanian colonies and Phoenicians in search of minerals, and they circulated thanks to the mediation of the Etruscans.

At the beginning of the 7th century in southern Picenum, luxury imports were still limited, but they provide evidence of the start of cultural sharing between the two shores of the Adriatic, linking typically Italic objects to the imported ones.
In this period, called Orientalising Period, Picenes organised their communities according to gentes, i.e. family groups with and increasingly sharp difference among social classes.
